Employers can turn down prospective employees for any number of reasons. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), if a decision was made not to hire a person based on information obtained from a credit report, the employer must provide the applicant with the name, street address and telephone number of the consumer reporting agency (CRA) that furnished the report. The notice must inform the applicant of his or her right to obtain a free copy of his or her credit report and the applicant's right to dispute the information provided by the CRA. This notice need only be provided if the decision not to hire was based on information in the credit report.
